ONE WORD REVIEW: ADORABLE
Tom Hanks’ Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in this loveable film is thoroughly deserved, as he portrays a well-renowned, kind, childhood hero for many Americans, Mister Rogers. To prove his kindness, director Marielle Heller focusses on fictional journalist Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys), who is less compelled towards Fred Rogers than others around him. At the beginning, audiences may be slightly bored as they are shown remade clips from Mister Rogers’ show, however, the film just keeps getting better and better. Familial relationships are explored and developed, and, although it may sound cringe, the truly brilliant part of the film is its encouragement for audiences to be better. There is a brilliant moment, where everything falls silent for a moment, as Mister Rogers encourages Lloyd to think of those who have made him who he is in his life, and looks directly at the camera, and therefore to the audience. A truly brilliant film, with many depths and levels explored.
