A Streetcar Named Desire (The National Theatre/The Young Vic)

ONE WORD REVIEW: EXEMPLARY

The National Theatre Live’s best production published on their YouTube this quarantine. Not only is the in-the-round stage terribly innovative, but the variety of lighting states and use of costume are fabulous, to say the least. During the transitions, actors prepare for the next scene in a blue light, for example by changing their clothes and elements of the set themselves. There is even a real bath on stage that is used to wet Blanche during the performance. While Gillian Anderson’s performance as Blanche is phenomenal, American actor Ben Foster steals the show in his interpretation of Stanley Kubrick. Shifting audiences feelings towards him throughout the show, Foster shows off his acting talent. Vanessa Kirby is also superb as Stella, proving that she can truly play any role, and within a role, show so many emotions it would be impossible not to be exhausted each night. The Young Vic chose a challenging production idea and were successful in every way.
