Antony and Cleopatra (The National Theatre)

ONE WORD REVIEW: STUNNING

A performance that would blow even a non-theatre lover away. Sophie Okonedo and Ralph Fiennes are magnificent, offering performances of their lifetime, as they communicate Shakespeare’s words so clearly. Not only is there diction incredible, but they make the words sound like music, and therefore the plot is easily comprehended. With a live snake on stage, the action does not disappoint, and is supported by engaging transitions, as per the National’s usual repertoire. Unfortunately, the other supporting actors are not as magnificent, using their hands to explain the language rather than their voice; they let down the production a bit. However, ‘Antony and Cleopatra’ is certainly still worth the watch, with outstanding costumes and lighting states that transport the audience to the humid Egypt and Ancient Rome. Overall, a stunning production, which is available for free on the National Theatre’s YouTube channel.
