ONE WORD REVIEW: SATISFACTORY
A story that needed to be heard just isn’t told that well. Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman brilliantly play real-life news anchors. At the same time, Margot Robbie’s character is the most dominant performance, perhaps due to her fictional character, whose story is a culmination of multiple women’s. Set on the influential news network, Fox, audiences are offered various sexual harassment stories. Therefore some scenes are incredibly hard-hitting, and, at points, quite challenging to watch. However, the film does not entirely communicate how much these women’s experiences affected their lives, apart from in the case of Margot Robbie. Perhaps this was due to specific contracts, on what the film could say about the other non-fictional characters, Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson. Furthermore, there are some rather strange elements to the movie, such as Kate McKinnon’s performance as a lesbian hiding her sexuality to continue her job on Fox. It just seems odd that there is time for scenes such as these, and not enough exploration of Gretchen and Megyn’s own storylines, in the lead-up to their allegations.
