5/5 ONE WORD REVIEW: INNOVATIVE The same lead actors throughout the entire film, which was filmed over twelve years, and spans a Mason’s (Ellar Coltrane) life from junior school to graduation. The acting is incredible, particularly from the young actors playing Mason (Ellar Coltrane) and his sister Samantha (Lorelai Linklater). The marvellous Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke are groundbreaking, as expected, in their performances as Mason and Samantha’s divorced parents. Richard Linklater took a terrifying chance when deciding to film this movie with the same cast over many years, and it works beautifully. Such an innovative idea, and it is incredible how much more connected audiences feel to the characters while watching them develop and mature over the years.
