Frankenstein (National Theatre)

ONE WORD REVIEW: BRAVE

Each night, Johnny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch alternated between the roles of the Creature and Victor Frankenstein, which is understandable, considering the barely clothed creature is such a physically demanding role. Before the opening ten-minute sequence where the Creature learns how to walk, the actor playing Creature has to wait in an ‘embryo’ for half an hour while the audience take their seats. Both performances are available on the National Theatre’s YouTube channel. While it is interesting to compare and contrast the two performances, Le Miller’s Creature is the one to watch. Not only are his physicality and use of voice slightly more impressive and realistic, but his performance allows audiences to be rather more sympathetic. Furthermore, Cumberbatch’s performance as Frankenstein is stronger and more realistic than his colleagues.
