ONE WORD REVIEW: SPECTACULAR

Céline Sciamma explores ‘girlhood’ and sisterhood in such a raw and lovely way. The plot is full of so many twists, making it very realistic, and although it seems that the next moment or scene will be dark, it pleasantly surprises. Eye-opening to the lack of opportunity for some women in France by focussing on the life of the loveable Marieme (Karidja Touré), who seeks a better life, while lacking both familial and educational support. A beautiful French film, very different, with an entire scene filled with Marieme and three of her friends singing along and dancing to ‘Diamonds,’ Rihanna, in blue light. Everything from domestic violence to drug abuse is explored, yet the film is uplifting, and very entertaining.
