ONE WORD REVIEW: TRUE

The true story of one woman bringing so many others to freedom can not be described as anything other than uplifting. With raw emotions such as love, fear and pain evident through the incredible acting of Cynthia Erivo, it is completely understandable why her performance was Oscar nominated. Despite the common knowledge that Harriet’s numerous attempts to free others were all successful, director Kasi Lemmons maintains the tension with the use of music, and through her development of the lovable and selfless character of Harriet, whom all audience members sympathise with. This powerful film deserves to be recognised for its truthful representation of a terrifying historical time for black Americans, and the song at the end ‘Stand Up’ articulates this fear, and particularly Harriet’s strength, incredibly well.
