ONE WORD REVIEW: INTERESTING

Athol Fugard’s classic is incredibly written, highlighting the terrible racism in 1950s South Africa. With only three characters, an unlikely friendship between two black employees, Sam and Willie, and their white master, Hally, amid apartheid. Sam and Willie are practising for their performance in the finals of a ballroom dancing competition, and Hally is hiding from his parents in his family’s tearoom. Their friendship and sense of authority are challenged realistically, offering an emotional script, true to the times, perhaps due to the play being semi-autobiographical. A must-read and any performance of this production could be impressive with such a marvellous script.
