ONE WORD REVIEW: ANNOYING

A frustrating film, firstly due to the misleading trailer, and secondly due to the slightly unbelievable nature of its plot. Jake Gyllenhaal is brilliant as the psychotic weirdo Lou Bloom, who becomes a ‘nightcrawler’, listening to the police radio to film victims and crimes for news channels to buy and use. His acting is phenomenal and confirms his place as one of the best actors of his generation. Audiences assume the direction of the film will be slightly different from the one taken, which is exciting, albeit somewhat confusing at times. Overall, it just seems that this film is a bit of a disappointment, perhaps less due to Dan Gilroy’s direction, and more due to his screenplay. Surprisingly, this screenplay was directed for an Academy Award, when it seems that Gyllenhaal’s acting truly is the best part of the movie.
