Queen and Slim (2019)

Updated: Jun 9, 2020

4/5

ONE WORD REVIEW: CURRENT

After an awkward Tinder date, Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith) and Slim (Daniel Kaluuya) are stopped on their drive home, by a racist police officer, who unjustifiably treats them, before Slim shoots him himself as self-defence. This leads to them being on the run, while barely knowing each other, as their relationship, and popularity develops. The acting is brilliant, as is the cinematography. Unfortunately, at times the plot is frustratingly unbelievable as they push the limits of their freedom, for example, horse-riding when they should be rushing out of the country and staying out of sight. This film is a great watch during the current political climate, with numerous parallels to the Black Lives Matter protests going on around the country, and an innovative exploration of racism in America.
