Shoplifters (2018)

5/5

ONE WORD REVIEW: ORIGINAL

The Japanese drama and Palme d’Or winner, ‘Shoplifters,’ follows a dysfunctional ‘family’ who shoplift to survive their life in poverty. On their way home one evening, they discover Yuri, a five-year-old girl alone on a balcony and choose to take her to their home and feed her. As expected, drama ensues, at a slow pace, which forces audiences to question and gather their own opinions about whether the family’s life can be considered morally correct. So clever and individual, with excellent direction and writing from Hirokazu Kore-eda. Furthermore, the acting is superb, even by the young actor playing Yuri, which truly enhances the full production of the film. The decision to slowly reveal to audiences the relationships and connections between the family increases engagement and does not follow the more Hollywood technique of having everything out in the open from the outside. A truly brilliant film.
