ONE WORD REVIEW: PHENOMENAL

Adapted to the stage by Helen Edmundson, the plot of Andrea Levy’s novel is inspiringly awe worthy. The play is thoroughly engaging throughout, with some talented actors who play likeable characters, and make the entire performance very entertaining. The National Theatre do plays so well, with brilliant transitions, and an artistic use of sound and lighting which complements the work of those on stage. Audiences are transported from the ‘Small Island’ of Jamaica, to the ‘Small Island’ of England, to watch the journeys of Queenie and Hortense as they navigate relationships, and issues surrounding race. A powerful piece of theatre, exploring racial issues in the 1940s that are still present in modern society.
