ONE WORD REVIEW: SLOW
The Assistant follows the relatively boring day to day life of Jane (Julia Garner), an assistant to a major Hollywood producer – a kind of Harvey Weinstein figure. The opening scene is long and follows her morning routine as she sets up for her working week in the office. Jane is dressed using dull colours by the incredible costume designer, Rachel Dainer-Best, which contributes to the idea that Jane is ‘safe’ from this predator due to her appearance alone. Trying to navigate the uncomfortable feeling of guilt inside due to organising ‘meetings’ with her boss and young, beautiful women. A very slow-paced hour and a half, but so engaging. Due to the lack of talking, it is impossible to not keep your eyes on the screen. Julia Garner’s acting is superb, but Matthew Macfayden steals the show, despite only having a small role. Brilliant presentation of the fear of sexual harassment in the workplace, and the need for the MeToo movement.
