The Barber Shop Chronicles (The National Theatre)

Updated: Jun 9, 2020

3/5

ONE WORD REVIEW: DISJOINTED

The Leeds Playhouse’s production is rather bitty. While giving the audience insight into various conversations in barber shops around the world, the audience are given an insight into the global friendship of African men as they migrate to other communities. Although this is rather heart-warming, and amusing at times, with the Chelsea Football Club and their nationality being the main connection between them, it is just rather bitty. The audience do not truly get a sense of many specific characters, being constantly shifted to different countries and cultures, as well as backstories. This is disappointing, particularly with the fun dance sequences and talented use of props throughout. There just doesn’t seem to be enough of a narrative, and therefore audience connection, to the production.
