The Beat Beneath my Feet (2014)

ONE WORD REVIEW: CUTE

Cute, but not much more. ‘The Beat Beneath my Feet’ tells the story of a stereotypical ‘different’ boy, who considers himself a loser, on his journey of self-discovery through guitar lessons with a former Rockstar, who the rest of the world thinks to be dead. It’s not well filmed but is rather heart-warming. The cringe-worthy moments get slightly too intense and dramatic, and really detract from the story’s main message. Furthermore, the graphic representation of mental health and self-harming is quite inappropriate, hinting that when he is playing guitar he is happy and when he isn’t he is low, as though it is that simple. There is quite good music throughout, and the acting is ok, it is more the direction that needs work. Instead of being empowering, the film is just another high school movie due to the direction, unfortunately.
