The Farewell (2019)

ONE WORD REVIEW: HONEST

A fictional tale showcasing the raw emotion felt when apart from family. A Chinese family is separated from their grandmother, with one son living in Japan, another in New York, and the daughter staying in China to help with the grandmother. They take the decision to not inform their grandmother that she is suffering from cancer, and instead visit her for the final time, by organising a rushed wedding. The film is funny, terribly sad, and shows a different culture, where it is acceptable to shield victims from their illnesses. The film is quite heavy, and the main character Billi, played by Awkwafina, although initially likeable, starts to become irritating. The grandmother is an icon and provides much amusement. A great family watch but may be a bit close to home if living away from family, or if a family member is suffering from an illness.
