The High Note (2020)

Updated: Jun 9, 2020

2/5

ONE WORD REVIEW: LACKING

High Note has a gentle, nice concept for a romantic comedy, and some average jokes which sometimes provoke laughter. However, the film is lacking acting talent, good music, and a realistic and engaging plot. Dakota Johnson barely acts at all, and her boring, monotone voice is more apparent in this screenplay than ever before. Diana Ross’ daughter Tarcee Ellis Ross saves the movie from complete catastrophe, in her performance as terrifying, world-renowned megastar, Grace Davis. The film could have been better if the concept was that Grace helped Maggie (Dakota Johnson) in her desire to be a producer. However, it instead follows a love story with a weird connection back to Maggie’s job, and shows the industry to be lacking kindness, and songs without autotune. Very mediocre, mainly due to Flora Greeson’s screenplay, unfortunately.
