ONE WORD REVIEW: INDIE
Noah Baumbach explores the difficulty of joint custody post-divorce in his dramatic and heavy feature film. That said, the characters are so unlikeable, audiences cannot help but laugh at their arrogance, rather unexpectedly. With numerous Hollywood stars, including Jesse Eisenberg, Laura Linney, Jeff Daniels and William Baldwin, it comes as no surprise that the acting is so naturalistic and brilliant. Baumbach’s own parents divorced during his childhood, and therefore his direction and screenplay support the talent of these actors, presenting realistic characters which audiences can form their own opinions about. The effect of divorce on the children is explored, and cannot help but have an emotional connection with audiences, as the whole situation is terribly sad. While Marriage Story is a much more accomplished film by Baumbach, it is interesting to see how his filmmaking has come on, since the production of ‘The Squid and the Whale’.
