Twelfth Night (National Theatre)

Updated: Jun 9, 2020

5/5

The National Theatre brings Shakespeare’s classic narrative to a more modern setting. Tamsin Greig as Malvolio steals the show, but Daniel Rigby is hilarious in his role as Sir Andrew Aguecheek, dressed in full pink, and dancing at any opportunity. Unfortunately, the ‘Fool’ being played by a woman increases the sexual nature of some of her lines and therefore brings about an unwanted stereotype. Similarly, the romantic connection between Viola (Tamara Lawrence) and Orsino (Oliver Chris) is lacking. However, these negatives are outweighed by Simon Godwin’s magnificent direction of one of the best versions of ‘Twelfth Night’ known to the stage, with even the transitions being terribly fun, and engaging. There are numerous settings, with even a pool onstage and a live fountain, which creates an entirely innovative production which entertains. Godwin’s production provides incredible comedy, translating Shakespeare’s language astonishingly.
